Bulldog Health Conditions#
Skin Fold Dermatitis
moderateVery CommonBacterial and yeast infections developing within the deep skin folds characteristic of the breed. Affects face, tail pocket, and body folds.
Prevention: Daily cleaning and drying of all skin folds. Keep folds dry. Use veterinary-recommended wipes. Severe cases may require surgical fold reduction.
Symptoms: redness between skin folds, foul odor from folds, discharge or moisture in creases, scratching at face or body, hair loss in affected areas
Heat Sensitivity
life_threateningVery CommonInability to regulate body temperature due to compromised airways. Bulldogs can overheat rapidly and fatally in hot or humid conditions.
Prevention: Never leave in hot environments. Limit outdoor time when temperature exceeds 75°F / 24°C. Always have water and shade available. Air-conditioned environment essential. Know heatstroke first aid.
Symptoms: excessive panting, drooling, bright red tongue and gums, vomiting, collapse and loss of consciousness
Cherry Eye
moderateCommonProlapse of the third eyelid gland, visible as a red mass in the corner of the eye. Very common in Bulldogs.
Prevention: Not preventable. Surgical tacking (not removal) is recommended to preserve tear production and prevent chronic dry eye.
Symptoms: red or pink mass in corner of eye, excessive tearing, eye rubbing, dry eye if left untreated
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)
seriousVery CommonSeverely narrowed nostrils, elongated soft palate, and other airway abnormalities causing chronic breathing difficulty. Bulldogs are one of the most severely affected breeds.
Prevention: Choose breeders who health-test for airway function. Maintain lean weight. Avoid heat and humidity. Surgical correction (nares widening, soft palate resection) often needed.
Symptoms: loud breathing and snoring, exercise intolerance, gagging and retching, cyanosis (blue tongue/gums), sleep apnea
Hip Dysplasia
seriousVery CommonAbnormal hip joint development causing pain and arthritis. Bulldogs have one of the highest breed-specific rates of hip dysplasia.
Prevention: Select breeders who OFA-certify hips. Maintain lean weight (critical for this breed). Low-impact exercise. Joint supplements from young adulthood.
Symptoms: difficulty rising, reluctance to climb stairs, bunny-hopping gait, hind leg lameness, decreased activity
Bulldog Growth Chart#
| Age | Weight Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 months | 8–12 lbs | Stocky and compact; growth beginning |
| 4 months | 18–25 lbs | About 45% of adult weight; broad build emerging |
| 6 months | 25–35 lbs | Approximately 60% of adult weight; filling out |
| 9 months | 33–44 lbs | Nearing adult size; muscular build developing |
| 1 year | 38–50 lbs | Close to adult weight; may fill out slightly more |
| 1.5 years | 40–55 lbs | Adult size reached; fully filled out |
| 2 years | 40–55 lbs | Weight should be stable |
Healthy adult males weigh 50-55 lbs, females 40-44 lbs. Bulldogs are extremely obesity-prone. Even a few extra pounds severely worsens breathing problems and joint stress. Maintain lean body condition.
Bulldog Life Stages#
puppy
0mo – 6moRapid growth phase. Bulldog puppies are stocky and playful but tire quickly. Breathing should be monitored during play, especially in warm weather.
adolescent
6mo – 1.2yrFilling out to adult build. Stubbornness may peak. Brachycephalic issues may become more apparent as the head broadens.
young adult
1.2yr – 2.5yrPhysically mature. Bulldogs settle into their calm adult personality relatively early compared to many breeds.
adult
2.5yr – 5.5yrSettled companion phase. Low energy, affectionate, and content. Strict weight management and breathing monitoring essential.
mature adult
5.5yr – 7yrAging begins to show in Bulldogs earlier than many breeds. Breathing problems may worsen. Mobility may decline.
senior
7yr – 9yrSenior care with increased health concerns. Breathing, joints, and skin all require close attention. Exercise tolerance further reduced.
geriatric
9yr – end of lifeFocus on comfort and quality of life. Bulldogs reaching this stage need significant health support and climate-controlled environments.
Dental Milestones#
Brachycephalic jaw structure causes crowded, misaligned teeth prone to early periodontal disease. Underbite is standard for the breed. Daily brushing essential; professional cleanings typically needed earlier and more frequently than non-brachycephalic breeds.
