Beagle Health Conditions#
Cherry Eye

Prevention: Not preventable. Surgical tacking (not removal) is the recommended treatment to preserve tear production.

Epilepsy
seriousCommonIdiopathic epilepsy causing recurrent seizures. Beagles are one of the most predisposed breeds for this condition.
Prevention: Not preventable but manageable with medication. Maintain a seizure log. Avoid known triggers such as stress, missed meals, and flashing lights.
Symptoms: seizures, loss of consciousness, paddling legs, drooling, disorientation after episode
Hip Dysplasia
seriousModerateAbnormal development of the hip joint leading to arthritis and pain. Moderate prevalence in Beagles.
Prevention: Select breeders who OFA-certify hips. Maintain healthy weight. Avoid excessive jumping during growth. Supplement with joint support.
Symptoms: bunny-hopping gait, difficulty rising, reluctance to climb stairs, decreased activity, hind leg lameness
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)
seriousModerateDegeneration or herniation of spinal discs causing pain and potential paralysis. Beagles have moderate risk due to their build.
Prevention: Maintain healthy weight, use ramps instead of stairs, avoid excessive jumping, support the back when lifting.
Symptoms: back or neck pain, reluctance to jump or climb, hunched posture, wobbling gait, paralysis in severe cases
Hypothyroidism
moderateCommonUnderactive thyroid gland causing metabolic slowdown. Common in middle-aged Beagles.
Prevention: Not preventable. Routine thyroid screening from middle age. Easily managed with daily thyroid hormone replacement.
Symptoms: weight gain without increased food intake, lethargy, hair loss or thinning coat, cold intolerance, skin infections

Healthy adult Beagles weigh 20-30 lbs regardless of sex. Beagles are notorious food hounds and obesity is a major concern. Ribs should be easily felt with a visible waist.

0mo – 6moRapid growth phase with intense curiosity. Beagle puppies are energetic explorers whose nose leads them everywhere. Reach about 50% of adult weight by 4 months.
adolescent
6mo – 1.2yrPeak energy and scent-driven independence. Beagles become increasingly nose-focused and may ignore commands when tracking a scent.
young adult
1.2yr – 3yrPhysically mature but still very energetic. Settling somewhat but still highly driven by scent and food.

3yr – 7yrSteady temperament with continued high energy. Beagles remain active and food-motivated throughout adulthood.

7yr – 9yrBeginning to slow down slightly. May show graying around muzzle. Still enjoys walks and scent work but tires more quickly.

Dental Milestones#
Beagles have standard dental anatomy but can be resistant to tooth brushing. Start young and use patience. Dental chews are well-received given their love of food.
