Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is a powerful, intelligent working dog descended from Roman drover dogs that drove cattle to market through Rottweil, Germany. Bred for strength, endurance, and guarding instinct, Rottweilers are confident and calm with their family but naturally reserved with strangers. They require experienced ownership, firm training, and early socialization to channel their protective instincts appropriately.

Open Rottweiler Age CalculatorCommon Health Conditions
Osteosarcoma
Aggressive bone cancer affecting approximately 5-12% of Rottweilers — among the highest rates of any breed. Typically presents as sudden limb lameness in dogs over 7 years. Amputation plus chemotherapy is standard treatment.
Typical onset: 5–10 years
Hip Dysplasia
Abnormal hip joint development causing progressive arthritis. OFA data shows approximately 20% of Rottweilers affected, making screening essential before breeding. Weight management significantly impacts progression.
Typical onset: 1–4 years
Elbow Dysplasia
Developmental abnormality of the elbow joint causing lameness. Rottweilers have one of the highest elbow dysplasia rates at approximately 38% per OFA data. Often bilateral. Early detection through screening improves outcomes.
Typical onset: 0.5–2 years
Bloat (GDV)
Life-threatening gastric torsion where the stomach twists on its axis. Deep-chested Rottweilers are at significant risk, especially after rapid eating or exercise post-meal. Prophylactic gastropexy during spay/neuter is increasingly recommended.
Typical onset: 3–10 years
Aortic Stenosis
Congenital narrowing of the aortic valve causing heart murmur and potential sudden death. Rottweilers are a top-affected breed. Cardiac screening by board-certified cardiologist recommended before age 2.
Typical onset: 0.5–3 years
Lifespan Factors
The median lifespan for a Rottweiler is 9.5 years. Key factors that influence longevity:
- cancer (bone/lymphoma)
- hip/elbow dysplasia
- bloat
- cardiac disease
