Poodle Health Conditions#
Bloat / Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV)
life_threateningCommonStomach distends with gas and may twist, cutting off blood supply. Standard Poodles' deep chest makes them highly susceptible. Requires emergency surgery if torsion occurs.
Prevention: Feed 2-3 smaller meals daily. Avoid raised food bowls (contrary to old advice). No vigorous exercise around mealtimes. Discuss prophylactic gastropexy with your vet, especially if family history.
Symptoms: distended abdomen, unproductive retching, restlessness, excessive drooling, rapid shallow breathing, pale gums
Hip Dysplasia
seriousModerateAbnormal hip joint development leading to arthritis and pain. Less common than in some large breeds but still a significant concern in Standard Poodles.
Prevention: Purchase from OFA-certified parents. Maintain lean body weight. Appropriate exercise — swimming is excellent for Poodles. Joint supplements from middle age.
Symptoms: stiffness after rest, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, bunny-hopping gait, decreased activity, hind-end lameness
Addison's Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism)
seriousModerateThe adrenal glands produce insufficient hormones. Standard Poodles have a strong genetic predisposition. Can be life-threatening if undiagnosed but is manageable with lifelong medication once identified.
Prevention: No prevention, but awareness is key. Baseline cortisol testing recommended. Symptoms can mimic many other conditions — maintain a high index of suspicion with this breed.
Symptoms: lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, shaking, weight loss, intermittent collapse
Sebaceous Adenitis
moderateModerateInflammatory disease destroying the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin, causing hair loss and skin scaling. Particularly prevalent in Standard Poodles.
Prevention: No prevention. Genetic predisposition. Skin biopsies can confirm. Management includes oil baths, keratolytic shampoos, and essential fatty acids. Breeders should screen.
Symptoms: silvery-white scales adhering to hair, patchy hair loss, dull brittle coat, musty odour, secondary skin infections
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
seriousModerateInherited degeneration of the retina leading to progressive vision loss and eventual blindness. DNA testing is available for the prcd-PRA variant common in Poodles.
Prevention: DNA test breeding stock for prcd-PRA. No treatment exists. Annual eye exams (CERF/OFA) help with early detection and adaptation planning.
Symptoms: night blindness (earliest sign), dilated pupils, reluctance to go outside at dusk, bumping into objects in dim light, increased eye shine
Poodle Growth Chart#
| Age | Weight Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 months | 10–16 lbs | Fluffy puppy coat. Active and playful. Beginning to explore. |
| 4 months | 22–32 lbs | Rapid growth. Coat beginning to change texture. Lanky appearance. |
| 6 months | 30–42 lbs | About 60-65% of adult weight. Coat transition causing matting challenges. |
| 9 months | 38–52 lbs | Approaching adult height. Body filling out. Adult coat establishing. |
| 1 year | 42–58 lbs | Near full height. Chest and muscle mass still developing. |
| 1.5 years | 45–70 lbs | Physically mature. Full adult coat and body proportions. |
| 2 years | 45–70 lbs | Weight stable. Any further changes should be monitored. |
Males typically 60-70 lbs, females 40-50 lbs. Standard Poodles should appear athletic and well-proportioned, not heavy or stocky. Maintain lean condition for joint health.
Poodle Life Stages#
puppy
0mo – 6moStandard Poodle puppies are lively, quick learners with a soft curly coat that will change texture as they mature. Early grooming handling is crucial so they accept lifelong coat maintenance. Naturally social and eager to please.
adolescent
6mo – 1.3yrCoat transitions from puppy fluff to adult curls, often matting easily during this change. High energy with occasional bursts of silly behaviour. Very trainable but may become bored with repetitive exercises.
young adult
1.3yr – 2.5yrPhysically mature by 18 months with full adult coat established. Energy remains high but focus improves. Poodles excel in agility, obedience, and water sports during this stage. Calms noticeably around 24 months.
adult
2.5yr – 6yrPrime years with elegant appearance and stable temperament. Highly attuned to owners and emotionally sensitive. Thrives with a job or regular activity. Coat maintenance is an ongoing commitment.
mature adult
6yr – 9yrMay show some greying around the muzzle. Still active and engaged. Watch for early signs of Addison's disease or joint stiffness. Regular blood work becomes more important.
senior
9yr – 12yrActivity levels decrease but Poodles remain mentally sharp longer than many breeds. May develop vision issues (PRA) or skin conditions. Grooming sessions should include body checks for lumps or skin changes.
geriatric
12yr – end of lifeAdvanced age. Standard Poodles that reach this stage often maintain good cognitive function. Physical limitations increase. Shorter, gentler grooming sessions and focus on comfort and quality of life.
Dental Milestones#
Standard Poodles generally have good dental health compared to smaller varieties, but still benefit from consistent home care. Retained puppy teeth should be extracted promptly. Long facial hair can trap food debris — keep muzzle area clean.
